In most areas of the country, burial vaults, or outer burial containers are not required by law. However, most cemeteries require their use for the maintenance of the gravesite. The primary purpose of a burial vault is to support the weight of the earth above the grave. The State of Texas requires that at least 1-1/2 feet of soil be placed between the top of the vault lid and the surface of the grave. Either a burial vault or a graveliner will meet most minimum requirements for cemeteries.

There are 3 types of vaults:

1) Top seal vaults are sealed as the top lid comes into contact with the lower box portion of the vault in a tongue-and-groove sequence. Burial vaults by Wilbert® are concrete and offer a tongue-and-groove sealing mechanism.

2) Air Dome Vaults: Air dome vaults use the power of air to keep water or other elements from entering the grave. The casket is placed on base plate at the bottom of the grave and the dome of the vault is placed over the casket, thus completing the air seal. However, if the grave is not level, the seal will not remain perfect. Air dome vaults are made of copper, stainless steel, galvanized steel, and concrete.

3) Graveliner: A graveliner is an unfinished, non-sealed, concrete container.
