Bill Benson, 84, passed away March 10, 2024, in San Angelo.


A private family service will be at a later date. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.


Mr. Benson was born December 25, 1939 in Winters, Texas, to Martin and Tommie Benson. Bill was a lifelong Tom Green County resident. He married Beverly Betsill on June 17, 1961, in San Angelo. Bill retired as Chief Appraiser for the Tom Green County Appraisal District after 42 years of devoted service.  He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission in Millersview. He loved playing baseball and was recruited to tryout by the Pittsburgh Pirates.  His "Happy Place" was a spot high on a hill in Doole, Tx, that he called Ponder Rock, where he sat many a day gathering his thoughts.   


The family would like to give a special thanks to Rusty Dean and Tom Burke for their dedicated friendship. He was also exceptionally cared for by Dr. Amin Parhizgar, and Tom and the entire staff at the Fresenius Kidney Care Center.  


Survivors include his wife, Beverly Benson; his children Tammy Wankowski and husband Kurt of San Angelo; Billy Benson and wife Julie of Doole; Dawn Wessman and husband Tom of Bastrop; and Therran Johnson and husband Steve of San Angelo; brother Larry Benson and wife Ginny of San Angelo; brother-in-law John Seaton of San Angelo; and nephew Josh Seaton and wife Leslie of New Braunfels.   Bill had seven grandchildren: Jerimiah Wankowski, Katherine Babcock, Kristen Brenek, Brittany Whitehead, Taylor Benson, Bailey McAbee, and Gentry Wessman; 11 great grandchildren, and his beloved pet, Abby Rose.  Bill is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bobbie Benson and sister Lynell Seaton.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your local animal shelter or St. Jude's Research Hospital.
