On February 25, 2023 while resting peacefully in her home, the faith of Carol Elizabeth Baze Hess was made sight. She was born February 9, 1938 in Brady and graduated from Farmersville High School in 1955. Carol married James Hess on June 21, 1957 in Farmersville. She then received her bachelor's degree in education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The quintessential coach's wife, Carol moved with Jimmy to Farmersville, McKinney, Rockwall, Houston, Baytown, San Angelo where they lived from 1972 - 1982, Nacogdoches, Las Cruces, and finally returning to San Angelo to retire in 1996. Carol was Jimmy's most loving and steadfast supporter, without whose sacrifice and devotion his success would not have been possible.
But while Carol enjoyed her role as Jimmy's biggest fan, she carved out her own career teaching elementary school for many years, particularly enjoying teaching math, selling real estate and owning a dress store - Mathis Baze.
But her greatest love and longest lasting legacy is her marriage of 64 years to Jimmy and the family she created with him. She was and remains dearly loved by her two daughters, Kim and Terri, and her 7 grandchildren who called her Nanny.
Carol was a member of the Johnson Street Church of Christ.
In addition to her two daughters, survivors include Kim's husband Blane Williams of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Terri's husband Mike Garatoni of San Antonio; grandchildren, Tara Joiner, Lauren Guins and husband Cody of Christoval, Ali Hill and husband Casey of Memphis, Tennessee, Peter Garatoni and wife Whitney of Houston, Courtney Jezek and husband Travis of Midland, Jared Williams of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Michael Garatoni of San Antonio; 10 great grandchildren, Ketcher, Ali Rose, Kate, Mary, Emmerson, Tucker, Henry, Brazos, Anita, and Rosie; and a nephew, Col. Wallace Baze. Carol was preceded in death by her husband Jimmy, her parents Wayne and Helen Baze and her brother, Wallace Ray Baze.
The family would like to thank Visiting Angels, especially LeAnn and two of her sweetest angels, Khali and Anna, and her wonderful friends and neighbors.
The family will receive visitors from 5:00 - 6:30 PM Friday, March 3, 2023, at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Garden under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
