R B. "RED" DOOLEY

Family visitation will be held on Monday, August 1, 2005 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at First Christian Church with Rev. Ben Hubert officiating. Military Honors will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. He was the fourth child born to James T. and Mary Charlotte Faubion Dooley. He was born April 22, 1916 in Ireland, Texas. He was married to Hazel McCoy December 17, 1949 in San Angelo, Texas. He graduated from Ireland High School and John Tarleton Junior College. He earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from A&M College of Texas. He was involved in military service, both active and reserve from 1934 to 1967. He was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from A&M College in 1939. He taught Agriculture in Aspermont High School two years before volunteering for active duty in January 1942. He served in the infantry in the Asiatic-Pacific regions until March 1946. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery and has battle stars for five major battles. He commanded his local reserve unit for many years. He retired as Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserves. R. B. taught in Aspermont High School for three years before leaving to become a faculty member at Texas A&M University (1947-1948). He left A&M to become a faculty member at San Angelo Junior College in 1948. He managed the college bookstore until 1956 along with his job of teaching agriculture. He taught agriculture at this institution for 30 years before retiring in 1978. He received many state and local honors including District and State Friend of 4-H Award, Lone Star Farmer of FFA, Texas County Extension Agents' "Man of the year in Texas Agriculture", Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers' Special Award for outstanding contributions to the sheep and goat industry. Angelo State Ex-Student Association honored him in 1979 as retired faculty member of the year. He was named a Director Emeritus of San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association for twenty-five years as a director of 4-H and FFA Activities. He was named "Aggie of the Year" in 1986 by members of The West Texas A&M Club. He was instrumental in organizing The Professional Agricultural Workers Society and was the first president of the group. The ASU Block and Bridle Club awarded him a plaque and special thanks for 30 years of dedicated service to agricultural students at San Angelo College and Angelo State University. He received Nathan Jeweler's All Sports Award in 1983, and Angelo State University certificate of Merit Award. R. B. was also a member of The Trail Blazers of Big Lake, TX. R. B. was active in community service. He judged District and area Community Improvement Contest for the Texas A&M University Agricultural Extension Service. He was a volunteer for Meals for the Elderly. He was a past president of Concho Educators Federal Credit Union and served on the Board of United Christian Ministries at ASU. He and his wife, Hazel were PTA presidents of all the schools where their children attended (Glenmore, Washington, Edison Junior High, and San Angelo Central High). He was honored with a Life Membership from Edison PTA. He was a 4-H Adult leader and on the advisory committee for Boy Scouts. He was active in Texas Society of Range Management, Texas Association of College Teachers, San Angelo Retired Teachers Association, Concho Chapter Phi Delta Kappa, Professional Agricultural Workers Society, San Angelo A&M Club, and RSVP. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples). He was an elder, past chairman of the official board, past president of Henson Sunday School class, former sponsor of Christian Youth Fellowship, Sunday school teacher and was a bell ringer in the adult hand bell choir. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Hazel and their two children; Esta Smith and her husband, James of Katmandu, Nepal, and Larry Dooley and his wife Kim of College Station, Texas, and eleven grandchildren: Eva Hack and her husband, Tom, and Paula Braatan and her husband, Phil, of Escondido, CA; Angie Frouman and her husband, Jonathan, of Puebla, Mexico; Francesca Smith of Dallas, TX; Nina, Sara, Julianna, Christie, and Jimmy Smith all of Kathmandu, Nepal. Britni Dooley and Brooke Dooley of College Station, TX and four great grand children. He is also survived by his younger brother, Larry E. Dooley, and his wife Jo, of Abilene, and sisters-in-law Lucile Krueger, Mildred Smith, Bonnie Osburn all of Temple, TX, June McCoy of Irving, TX and Maybelle McCoy of El Paso, TX. He is also survived by nephew and caretaker, Jim McCoy of Big Lake and sixteen other nephews and nieces. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 29 N.
